While Samsung may think they have enough time and money to poke fun at Apple, in reality, the iPhone 5 has apparently saved its crown from Samsung's Galaxy S4.
While Samsung has so far shipped 20 million Galaxy S4 smartphones since its launch in April 2013 according to recent reports, making the smartphone Samsung's fastest-selling device ever, the sales rate lags far behind Apple's iPhone 5.
According to ISI Group analyst Brian Marshall, who broke down the numbers from both companies to compare their flagship smartphones on the same ground, the iPhone 5 sales is twice faster than the Galaxy S4.
Apple sold 5 million units of the iPhone 5 in its opening weekend, and 48 million total iPhones in the first full quarter since its release. While Apple's iPhone 5 took only 25 days to reach the 20 million mark, Samsung took 60 days to sell 20 million Galaxy S4.
In the UK, the iPhone 5 remains the nation's most popular smartphone for a fourth consecutive month, according to uSwitch Mobile Tracker. According to data from smartphone sales, pre-orders and live searches, the Galaxy S4 remained third, ironically beaten by the nearly two-year-old iPhone 4S.
“Samsung really caught lightning in a bottle with the Galaxy S3, delivering an affordable and appealing iPhone alternative at the perfect moment,” says Ernest Doku, a telecoms expert with uSwitch.
“The Galaxy S4 has so far failed to grab the attention of smartphone fans in quite the same way.”
“The fact the S4 is tracking below analysts’ expectations could explain why the South Korean giant has brought the launches of its Galaxy S4 Zoom, S4 Active and S4 Mini to the fore - a trio of smartphones targeting specific sectors of the market with a laser-like focus," Doku explains.
“Its strategy has always been to dominate the market with multiple devices, rather than focusing on a single effort and, thus far, it has proven a very successful approach.”
Another report from analysts We Are Social revealed that, while Apple's iPhone 5 stirred much more buzz on its launch day, it also garnered more criticism than Samsung's Galaxy S4.
When it comes to brand criticism, the iPhone 5 received 20 % criticism while the Galaxy S4 11 %, according to The Daily Mail.
However, more criticism may just mean higher expectation. The Apple smartphone is receiving stronger brand loyalty from its customers, We Are Social found out, with Apple leading with 42% in brand appeal, in contrast to Samsung's 20 %.
From these reports, the iPhone 5's victory is evident. We are yet to see whether Samsung can overturn Apple's reign with its expanding Galaxy family, but it may be just too early for them to claim a bite.
